Frédéric FLEURY

"Have you ever heard of Frédéric Fleury? Of course not. No one has. He was a French cartoonist that died tragically during the legendary War+Penis Massacre way back in 2011. But before he died he left behind a bunch of awesome monster drawings. (He also left behind a LOT of really shitty drawings, but we’re not here to talk about those. We’re here to talk about the monster stuff). Before he died of penis poisoning Freddy was one of the best monster artists around. Fred had a unique and childlike approach to drawing monsters, which was in itself very interesting, but it was his constant inventiveness in this area that intrigued me the most. The spaced out, drippy eyes, the labyrinthine hair, the swollen black tumors, the poorly stitched scars, the oozing maggoty torsos, the cracked and jagged toenails. He was obviously trying to create the most vomitous and bizarre monsters he could, trying hard to top himself every time, paying close attention to every disgusting detail. But, even though his monsters were pretty gross they still looked like they wound be kind of fun to hang out with or ride on their spiny backs across the broken landscape or even down into that slimy, black cave. I dunno… Call me crazy but I love this guy’s monsters. It’s some of the most exciting and inspirational stuff out there. Imagine what he’s be doing today if he was still alive. Rest in peace, Freddy. You are truly missed."

Frédéric Fleury, né en 1973 à Cherbourg, est un artiste français.

Il enseigne à l'école d'arts de Calais et collabore régulièrement avec le magazine Vice.

Son travail est basé sur la pratique du dessin et de l'édition. 

Il est un des fondateurs des Éditions du 57 (structure légère et indépendante d’édition de livres d’artistes) et de Frédéric Magazine (collectif d’artistes et site internet éponyme dédiés au dessin).

Cet artiste refuse l'idée d'un style trop facilement reconnaissable ou identifiable et tente de brouiller les pistes d'une ligne qui pourrait devenir en quelque sorte sa signature. 

Dans ses recherches récentes, ses dessins s'articulent autour de figures ou de formes monstrueuses, grotesques, dégoulinantes et malades qu'il utilise comme le terrain de jeu d'expérimentations lui permettant de repousser les limites de son trait.

Par son travail éditorial, il consigne l'état d'avancement de ses travaux dans des ouvrages souvent auto édités.
Il dédie une partie de son activité à des collaborations avec d'autres dessinateurs (Johnny Ryan, Mehdi Hercberg...) enrichissant et élargissant ainsi son langage graphique. 

Il expose régulièrement son travail en France comme à l'étranger à travers des structures comme Pictoplasma, Nieves, Picturebox inc ou Vice Magazine.
